Autumn hedgerow

Hawthorn

Crataegus monogyna

Hawthorn is hedge, boundary, blossom, thorn, and berry. In autumn it asks us to notice the heart of the landscape as much as the harvest.

Harvest

How we meet this plant

Gather ripe red haws from abundant trees, leaving plenty for birds. Spring flowers and leaves have their own shorter season.

Preparation

At the kitchen table

Use haws in syrups, vinegars, jams, teas, and long-steeped preparations. Remove hard seeds from food preparations where needed.

Community Use

Why we teach it

A beautiful plant for community walks about hedgerow history, boundaries, wildlife, and heart-centred care.

Safety

Hawthorn can interact with heart and blood pressure medication. Consult a qualified practitioner before medicinal use.
